Touristic Routes
From Calblanque to Cala Reona:
Calblanque is one of the few areas of the coast of Murcia that still preserves its nature intact. One part of the coast is formed by arid ranges, fossil dunes, long golden beaches and a deep-blue sea, which was declared a National Park in 1987.
The circular route goes from Las Cañas beach, next to the parking in the park, until Reona, around paths and tracks through the Rasall salt flats and the cliffs in the Atalayón Hill.
Duration: one hour and 30 minutes.
Lenght: 14,8 kilometres.
Dificulty: average. Before reaching the Reona cove the track goes through an area of cliffs and old mining wells where you must take special care. If you are travelling by bike, you must get off and push it for about 500 metres.
Description of the route:
0.0- Aarking at the Calblanque regional park. Take the lightly marked route that starts from the eastern end (on your left facing the sea)..
0.2- You will reach a path at the end of the watercourse: follow it to the right.
2.5- On the right you will see a track to the beach, where you can see the salt flats.
4.2- As you reach the summit you will get a wonderful view of Calblanque.
4.6- The road finishes and there is a new well-marked path that goes around Atalayón Hill.
Cross the old mines, where you can still see some of the installations, as well as great accumulation of waste in yellowish colours. Careful with the wells.
5.2- The track gets narrower to avoid the cliffs. Take special care and get off your bike.
6.6- After a steep down Hill you will get to Reona cove. In summer there is a stand serving meals and snacks. Continue along the tarmacked road until you reach La Manga motorway.
7.7- Crossroads and freeway. Take the service road on the left.
11.4- Crossroads and entrance to Calblanque. Turn left along the path.
14.8- Parking and end of the route.
Recommendations:
Do not approach the entrance to the mining wells. Get off you bike and take special care along the track before Reona cove. The Rasall salt flats are an area for bird breeding so try not to disturb them.
Interesting places:
La Jordana and Cobaticas. The two main centres of the area show the typical Mediterranean cubical house, which is white on the outside and cool in the inside and has been built using the land resources.
In Cobaticas, about 30 years ago, there were 40 families which lived off cattle, wood and esparto. Calblanque offers a wide variety of natural environments: calcareous massifs on the north and shales to the south; sand strips of an exception golden shade; fossil dunes of great interest.
The vegetation is more of an African than a European style and has adapted perfectly to the aridity conditions on this area: fig trees, mezquits, palm trees, agraves, gorses and dwarf palm trees, as well as some samples of the "Sabina mora". The Rasall salt flats have many species of birds that choose this area to spend their winter during migration, such as egrets, ringed plover, flamingos and avocets.
