Carnival time in Cartagena:

Carnival celebrations were very popular in Cartagena, especially in the second half of the 19th century, but were forbidden when the Civil War ended.

With the restoration of democracy, in 1981 this secular celebration was recovered and is now one the stars of the local festive cycle. During its celebration you can see shows, dances, costume competitions and "chirigotas" (groups with jokes and songs) that involve both the locals and the foreigners.
